Highlights of Being a Mentor

Here are some of my favorite moments and experiences that were made possible by my role as a teacher, mentor, and guide.

Starbase Trip

In 2024, I was flown to Starbase Texas to help introduce Alpha School to "game-schooling" and Kerbal Space Program with my friends at Recess.gg. This trip involved cool sights, but more importantly incredible people both inside & out of the facility. On the outside, people with a common passion and great helpfulness. On the inside, people working hard to move humanity to greater heights.

Referring an Analog Astronaut

In 2022, the first ever week-long teenage Analog Mission at the Mars Desert Research Station included one of my students, who served as medical officer.

Now it is even more special, as I've been assigned to the same Research Station for my own Analog Astronaut Mission in January 2026!

Cubes In Space

I've had multiple students send their own science experiments into space on NASA rockets, as part of the Cubes in Space program.

Sitting in a Moon Lander

As part of my 2024 Starbase trip, I was able to tour inside the production facility, and explore the Starship HLS (Human Landing System). Sitting in the commander's seat of an actual prototype of the ship that will land the next humans on the moon was a surreal experience!!

Meeting an Astronaut

I found out Chris Hadfield is an amazing author, and was able to shake hands and talk about the amazing opportunities now available to kids around the world, compared to how it was actually impossible for him, when he decided as a kid to become an Astronaut.

 Base Camp Zero

At Starbase I met an amazing man who leads a group dedicated to helping kids around the world achieve their dreams & change the world.

Calvin is nearly always at Starbase, and he knows all the tips to have the best experience, meet the best people, and he really helps kids understand their potential in changing the world, and even beyond.
